DEFENCE SECURITY ASIA) – Pakistan has reportedly approved the purchase of the Chinese-made fifth-generation fighter jet, the Shenyang J-35, with deliveries expected within 24 months.

According to Pakistan’s 24 News HD media outlet, this acquisition is part of Pakistan Air Force’s (PAF) efforts to enhance its capabilities and widen the gap between its air power and that of India.

The Shenyang J-35 is expected to outperform India’s advanced fighters, such as the Rafale and Sukhoi Su-30MKI.

This advantage is projected to remain until India secures its own fifth-generation fighter jets.

Earlier this year, the PAF hinted at its intent to acquire the Shenyang J-35/FC-31 “Gyrfalcon,” developed by China’s Shenyang Aircraft Corporation.

PAF Chief of Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Baber Sidhu, stated that the Shenyang J-35/FC-31 would enter service “soon.”

Summary:

Pakistan has approved the acquisition of the Chinese-made fifth-generation fighter jet, the J-35, with deliveries expected within 24 months. This move aims to enhance the Pakistan Air Force’s (PAF) capabilities and widen its technological edge over India, which still relies on 4.5-generation fighters like the Rafale and Sukhoi Su-30MKI.

The J-35, developed by Shenyang Aircraft Corporation, is designed for air combat and air-to-ground operations. PAF pilots are already undergoing training in China to operate the aircraft, signaling its imminent inclusion in Pakistan’s fleet. The acquisition aligns with Pakistan’s broader strategy to modernize its air force, replacing aging F-16s and Mirage 5s with advanced fighters.

This deal also reflects China’s growing influence as a defense supplier, with the J-35 joining the J-10C and JF-17 in PAF’s inventory. Analysts view the J-35 as a significant boost to Pakistan’s air power and a key component of its future aerial strategy.

Negotiations for the procurement of the Shenyang J-35/FC-31 have reportedly been finalized, with PAF pilots already undergoing training in China to operate the aircraft.

The acquisition of the Shenyang J-35 has raised concerns in neighboring India, which still relies on 4.5-generation fighters like the Sukhoi Su-30MKI and Rafale.

The move underscores Pakistan’s commitment to advancing its aerial capabilities while highlighting China’s growing role as a defense supplier.

At the recent Airshow China 2024 in Zhuhai, China unveiled official images of its second fifth-generation stealth fighter, the Shenyang J-35A.

Designed for air combat and air-to-ground operations, the Shenyang J-35A reflects China’s ambition to compete with the United States in developing stealth fighters.

Chinese J-20

With the Shenyang J-35A, China joins the U.S. as the only nations to produce two distinct fifth-generation fighters, the Shenyang J-35A and J-20 “Mighty Dragon,” akin to the American F-35 and F-22 “Raptor.”

The inclusion of the Shenyang J-35 into PAF’s inventory complements earlier acquisitions of Chinese aircraft, including the J-10C and the jointly developed JF-17.

Analysts suggest the Shenyang J-35 will replace Pakistan’s aging F-16s and Mirage 5s, signaling a shift towards a more modern and diversified air force. – DSA

J-35, if and when in PAF service, is going to change the air power equation in the subcontinent.

One can talk about sheer numbers as an antidote by less capable platforms, but there is nothing in any subcontinental air force with J-35's equivalent capability at this time (even in Asia, excepting F-35s in Japanese, Korean, S'porean and Australian service).

Here is some more info about the J-35,

This 2022 article shows the evolution between the FC-31 version introduced in 2014, to the J-35 developed at present.

Most recent analysis,

That is fine but from where does China want to purchase fifth generation plane? Is it Sukhoi 57? We don't count those Chinese fighters as any threat. No matter how many so called fifth generation fighters China may induct, it is not going to cause any security concern for India.

Nice opinion, please elaborate.

PAF must retire a min 60 or so F-7PG's along with a 120 or so Mirage III/V's on their extreme last legs. That's about half the PAF.

Only modern jets are the 150 or so JF-17's and the remaining 68 F-16's. The J-10's only recently inducted in small numbers.

Nice opinion, please elaborate.

Because China has a track record of buying defence stuff which they had declared inferior to Chinese stuff. For example buying Su30 when they had J10, Buying Su35 when they had fifth generation plane J20,. They said that their HQ 9 is superior to S300 and S400 but ultimately bought Russian stuff. In past, same was the case with submarine as well. China exported JF17 to Pakistan but continued with old Mig21 but didn't induct JF17.

Oh bhai, Iran has a hard time dealing with the US backed IDF, even though it prevails via sheer numbers n tactics. Overwhelms the IDF stuck in one place trying to defend from multiple directions and levels of Iranian attacks.

China kya? Russiands today don’t got what the Iranians throw at you.

Su-30 or Su-35 or eff-thurrty-fav ain’t goin do jack shiit in todays combat arena.

Iran figured this out a generation ago. Baqi saaray chutiya mulk trying to desperately catch up with the reality….😝

Based on actual performance.

Pakistan JF-17 humiliates India Su-30.
Chinese J-10C humiliates Taiwanese F-16V
Chinese J-10C humiliates Indian Dream Su-35.

So. Indian Su-30 < Pakistani JF-17 < Taiwan F-16V < Chinese J-10C.

So in order to counter the J-10C, India bought Rafale fighter jets.

But based on actual performance. J-10C patrols near New Delhi. The Rafale fighter jet cannot reach Mount Everest due to reliability issues.

So based on actual performance. Whether it's India's existing fighter jets or the Indian Dream. All garbage.

Every nation has different roles for different types of assets and platforms according to their military planning and doctrine. They can buy some and make some. The key is what they are capable of producing in indigenous fashion, without depending on external sources. Which is not what India can do.

Do you know that the SU30 the Chinese "bought" was also produced in China itself as J15 and J16 ?? All the systems in these J15 and J16 are made in China itself (WS 10B engines, avionics like AESA radar). China's deployed J16s (more modern than India's SU 30 MKI) will exceed 350 plus units now. How many SU-30 MKIs does India have ?? About 259 ?

@Jiangnan I don't know if I am entirely truthful above.

I don't know if you have noticed another issue I raised - attendance rate.

J-10C, J-15, J-16, J-20, J-35A, etc. all use Chinese aviation engines.

Actual performance.

J-10C flies directly from China to Egypt. The mileage is 8000km without any faults.

The J-10C formation flew over Mount Everest. Prove that it still works excellently in extreme cold and high-altitude hypoxic environments.

The Liaoning aircraft carrier strike group took off and landed 420 J-15 in 8 days

The Shandong aircraft carrier strike group took off and landed 480 J-15 aircraft within 9 days.

This is attendance rate. Above, all sources of information can be provided.

Now let's take a look at the Indian Air Force.

Indian fighter jets are equipped with engines from Russia, France, and the United States. Then watch the J-10C fly at a distance of 300 km from New Delhi

My opinion is. Indian fighter jet, fly first...

You mentioned about J15 here. Do you want to know what Chinese media tells about J15? They call it a bogus aircraft which can not carry more than 2 ton payload from deck. If you want, I can post the article link.
