I have been to Bumrungrad International Hospital in Bangkok and can vouch for their excellent service.

As an international standard hospital, their place as ideal role models for Bangladeshi hospitals is solid.

I predict that within five years Bumrungrad and other Thai Hospitals will open local facilities in Dhaka to provide Primary care and even specialized services along with local Bangladeshi partners and major business houses like Grameen, Akij, Meghna etc.

Grameen already has a major teaching hospital in Northern Dhaka (Uttara) and the other conglomerates are eyeing new startup hospitals.

Digital medical payments by Bangladeshi nationals in Thailand have increased by 20 per cent in 2024 in comparison with the previous year, according to an analysis by global digital payment service provider VISA.

It noted that around 90 per cent of international digital transactions were made in 20 countries, with India at the forefront, followed by the United States, the United Kingdom, Thailand, and the United Arab Emirates.

Spending by Bangladeshis in India declined by 10 per cent last year, while increased medical tourism led to a 20 per cent rise in expenditures in Thailand. In particular, spending on healthcare and pharmaceuticals in Thailand surged by 25 per cent and 35 per cent, respectively.

In Bangladesh, overall consumer spending through digital payment gateways rose by 14 per cent in 2024, with transaction volume rising by 17 per cent compared to the previous year. The key reason is increased use of credit cards, debit cards, and other online payment facilities.

The e-commerce sector remains the top contributor to digital spending. However, significant advancement has been noted in both direct in-store card use and online transactions.

The use of 'tap to pay' payments grew from 6 per cent in 2023 to 13 per cent in 2024, thanks to credit and debit cards. Besides, nearly half of all digital transactions from Bangladesh were conducted via digital wallet loading.

The acceptance of digital payments has risen significantly among businesses as card-based transactions rose by 50 per cent in the year. Particularly, business credit card transactions saw a 135 per cent jump, indicating a significant expansion in the digital economy.

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) of Bangladesh and the National Anti-Corruption Commission of Thailand have entered into a memorandum of understanding to jointly foster international cooperation in the fight against corruption.

ACC chairman Dr Mohammad Abdul Momen and NACC president Suchart Trakulkasemsuk signed the MoU on behalf of the respective organisations on Friday, said a spokesperson for the CA Office.

Chief Adviser Prof Dr Muhammad Yunus and Thailand Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra witnessed the signing of the MoUs on the sidelines of the BIMSTEC Summit in Bangkok.

Dr Momen hoped the MoU would help both Bangladesh and Thailand fight against corruption in a more effective way.

"Many of the Bangladeshi corruption suspects took shelter in some of the neighbouring countries. We believe this MoU will help track them down and bring them to book," he said.

The MoU was signed with the intention of enhancing international cooperation as specifically referred to in article 48 of the United Nations Convention against Corruption, which encourages state parties to ink bilateral and multilateral agreements on direct cooperation between their law-enforcement agencies.

According to the MoU, Dhaka and Bangkok will provide each other with initial information of relevance for the prevention of corruption, share best practices in carrying out information gathering, exchange information, initiate joint projects, share studies and perform other cooperative activities in the event of preventing and combating corruption as deemed necessary.
