Rooh Afza, meaning 'Refresher of the Soul,' originated in 1907 and was acquired by the pharmaceutical company Hamdard in 1908.

The founder of Hamdard, Hakim Abul Majid, discovered the unique drink and was intrigued by its taste. Since then, despite changes in the subcontinent, the original formula remains unchanged.

The iconic label of Rooh Afza was designed by Mirza Noor Ahamad in 1910 and printed by the Bolton Press of the Parsees of Bombay.

After the partition in 1947, Hamdard split into two branches: one led by Hakeem Abdul Hameed in India and the other by Hakim Said in Karachi, Pakistan.

Later, Hamdard Bangladesh was established in 1971. The recipe of Rooh Afza includes cooling agents, historically helpful against the hot summer winds of the region.

Today, Rooh Afza is closely associated with Ramadan, often consumed during iftar. It is also used widely as a syrup for drinks and desserts. Advertisements from 1952, 1987, and 1989 showcase its enduring popularity over the years.
