I'm not as pessimistic as you, I believe it is possible to be on good terms with both countries.

There are many cultural, economical, strategic reasons for Europeans to reject Turkey's EU membership. It's a complicated subject.

If Turkey had a population of 10 million like Greece instead of 80 million, a membership would be much more likely. With the flood of 13 million refugees and immigrants, Turkey's membership chances are completely dead.

Nobody In Western or eastern Europe wants Muslim Joingoist Erdugan's Turki in NATO and certainly USA is dead against it no mtter what you want to think but fact is on ground even Russian's , Egyptians-Arab's , Israelies and Iraninas & Europeans all dislike Turkey and none of them want it in NATO or to be too powerfull .... but you can dream
