The US Department of State in an announcement on Monday said former chief of Bangladesh Army, Aziz Ahmed, and his immediate family members, were ineligible for entry into the United States.

The decision stems from the US government's findings of former general Aziz Ahmed's involvement in 'significant corruption'.

The State Department's announcement, posted on its website, highlighted Aziz's actions as detrimental to Bangladesh's democratic institutions and eroding public trust in governmental processes.

Specifically, it noted Aziz's interference in public processes to aid his brother in evading accountability for criminal activities within Bangladesh.

Moreover, the announcement emphasised Aziz's complicity in corrupt practices, including improperly awarding military contracts and accepting bribes for personal gain.

These actions directly violated the principles of transparency and integrity, it said.

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today cautioned opposition leaders and activists against complacency regarding US sanctions on former Army Chief General Aziz Ahmed.

Speaking at a discussion, he urged the BNP followers to focus on unseating the Awami League government through their own efforts rather than relying on others.

"If I can't manage my own house, no one else will do it for me. Many may be happy over the sanctions on Aziz ... I think it's misleading and we're always getting confused," Fakhrul said.

He recalled that the US also imposed sanctions earlier on Rab and the officers of the elite force and the police but it could not stop the "terrible journey" of the current regime.

বড় ধরনের দুর্নীতিতে সম্পৃক্ততার কারণে বাংলাদেশের সাবেক সেনাপ্রধান জেনারেল (অব.) আজিজ আহমেদের ওপর নিষেধাজ্ঞা দিয়েছে যুক্তরাষ্ট্র।

নিষেধাজ্ঞায় আজিজ আহমেদ ও তার পরিবারের সদস্যরা যুক্তরাষ্ট্রে প্রবেশ করতে পারবে না।

স্থানীয় সময় গতকাল সোমবার দেশটির পররাষ্ট্র মন্ত্রণালয়ের ওয়েবসাইটে প্রকাশিত এক বিবৃতিতে এ কথা জানানো হয়।

বিবৃতিতে বলা হয়, আজিজ আহমেদের কর্মকাণ্ড বাংলাদেশের গণতন্ত্রের অবমূল্যায়ন এবং সরকারি প্রতিষ্ঠান ও প্রক্রিয়ার ওপর জনগণের আস্থা ক্ষুন্ন করেছে।

বিবৃতিতে আরও বলা হয়, আজিজ আহমেদ তার ভাইকে বাংলাদেশে অপরাধমূলক কর্মকাণ্ডের জন্য জবাবদিহি এড়াতে সহযোগিতা করেন। এটি করতে গিয়ে তিনি উল্লেখযোগ্য দুর্নীতিতে জড়িয়েছেন। এছাড়া তিনি তার ভাইকে সামরিকখাতে অন্যায্যভাবে কন্ট্রাক্ট পাওয়া নিশ্চিত করার জন্য কাজ করেছেন এবং সরকারি নিয়োগ দিতে ঘুষ গ্রহণ করেছেন।
